Top Must-See Movies This July

From DC and Marvel to the remake of the 1997 movie I Know What You Did Last Summer, July is shaping up to be an action-packed, horror-filled, reboot month for film junkies.

Jurassic World Rebirth

Release date: July 1

Set on the island facility of the original Jurassic Park, a team of skilled operatives must secure crucial humanity-saving genetic material from the dinosaurs that have long been abandoned there. Pivoting away from the Owen Grady storyline, this film is a soft reboot for the franchise, starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Luna Blaise. 

Heads of State

Release date: July 2

A humorous take on the state of US-UK relations, Idris Elba is the UK Prime Minister, while John Cena is the US President. A Prime production, the film follows the two rivals as they are forced to rely on each other when they become targets of the biggest security breach of the century. It’s silly, filled with puns, and a lighthearted way to look at our world. 

Deep Rising

Release date: July 2

Narrated and Produced by Jason Momoa, viewers will get a front-seat perspective on the significance of the ocean’s seafloor. From sustainable energy to geopolitics to scientific research, the documentary highlights the need to protect the depths of our ocean. It focuses on the highly secretive International Seabed Authority, an organization that is responsible for nearly half of the planet’s ocean floor.

I know What You Did Last Summer

Release date: July 7

This summer is definitely the summer of horror. This film is a remake of the 1997 horror classic, following a group of friends who accidentally kill someone and decide to cover it up. A year later, they are terrorized by a stalker who knows what they did and is determined to hunt them down one by one. The new film follows the exact plot in the same town 25 years later, but this time, the group turns to the survivors of the 1997 incident to help solve the mystery. 

Superman

Release date: July 10

Directed by James Gunn, the newest Superman film follows Clark Kent as he attempts to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing in Kansas. Inspired by the All-Star Superman comic, fans are optimistic that the movie will pay proper homage to the colors and story of the original.

Jaws@50: the Definitive Inside Story

Release date: July 11

50 years on from the release of Jaws, director and legend Steven Spielberg gives us insider access to the making of the film that still influences cinema to this day. If you’re a big film junkie, this one is not one to miss. 

Abraham’s Boys: a Dracula Story

Release date: July 11

If you’re looking for a horror movie with supernatural elements that’s based in scripture, and has plenty of complicated family dynamics to unpack, this one is for you. Based on Joe Hill’s 20th-century novel of the same name, the film follows Abraham’s sons Max and Rudy, who live under the strict and overprotective rule of their vampire-hunting father. The boys slowly come to learn of their parents’ pasts and the legacy of trauma and violence they are to inherit.

Eddington

Release date: July 18 (U.S. only)

Premiering at Cannes to mixed reactions, this A24 film stars Pedro Pascal as the mayor and Joaquin Phoenix as a small-town sheriff in a direct standoff. The modern, contemporary twist on an American Western is set during Covid and tackles some of the hard-hitting issues in American politics today, as it expertly captures the American political landscape of our time.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Release date: July 23

Set in a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world and starring Pedro Pascal, Julia Garner, and Vanessa Kirby, the Fantastic Four must protect mankind from the planet-consuming cosmic entity Galactus and his herald, the Silver Surfer. Moving away from the 2005 and 2007 adaptations, the film marks the beginning of Marvel’s Phase 6.

Sun and Concrete

Release date: July 30

Originally premiering at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2023, this German coming-of-age film is now set to open in Hong Kong in the Broadway Circuit cinemas. The film is an adaptation of the autobiography of the same name by Felix Lobrecht and follows four classmates who break into their school in an attempt to solve their money problems.
