Mid-May marked the return of the Cannes Film Festival to La Croisette. While this year’s edition introduced a stricter, more modest dress code, including a ban on “voluminous” outfits that could obstruct the traffic flow of guests, several celebrities still knew how to put on show-stopping outfits. Alexander Skarsgard, Pedro Pascal and Alton Mason put the sex appeal back to the evening, despite the no sheer and nudity rule. Other stars like Gong Jun and Paul Mescal brought a more relaxed but chic energy to their looks. Scroll on for a breakdown of nine of the most noteworthy celebrity fits.

Mescal not only delivered a thorough analysis of his new film The History of Sound, but also served some serious dose of Gucci looks. Dressed in a Gucci tuxedo for the Kering in Motion Awards, he carried himself with a kind of nonchalant elegance. His casual pseudo-tie and simple black silk shirt helped balance this classic look with a little extra charming flare.

For his film’s premiere, Paul wore a navy Gucci suit with a double breasted jacket and some classic loafers. Unbuttoned and scruffy, but still sharp—it was classic Paul Mescal.

Dressed by Stefano Pilati, the Leave One Day star abandoned his usual flair for colourful jackets in favour of a more muted but textured look. He paired it with a sleek pump and a subtle Messika brooch. But the real star of his three-piece was the wavy detailing on his waistcoat, which brought some dimension to this elegant look.

In a moment that had the internet gripped, the Chilean actor delivered a minimalist look in a sleeveless wool top and pleated flared trousers from the Calvin Klein Collection, while promoting his film Eddington. Topped off with some pretty sick silver studded leather boots, need I say more?

A$AP Rocky

In a white, baggy Miu Miu suit, A$AP Rocky resembled everyone’s favourite rich uncle. The rapper paired the outfit with a Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 3700 watch and his very own A$AP Rocky x Ray-Ban Wayfarer Puffer Shades.

Alexander Skargård

Known for putting a little kink into his outfits, Skarsgard stepped onto La Croisette in a simple double-breasted Saint Laurent suit which, from the top, could have been any ordinary outfit. Scan down the outfit and viewers found a pair of thigh-high leather boots. In a nod to his film Pillion, where he played a biker in a BDSM relationship, Skarsgård clearly did not shy away from bringing his role off the screen.

Dressed by Balmain in a sleek black zoot suit for the Highest 2 Lowest premiere, the supermodel topped off the look with an Ole Lynggaard Funky Star brooch and Audemars Piguet watch. His high, open collar perfectly framed a golden choker from APM Monaco, and the unbuttoned shirt brought some casual elegance to this sharp, fine and fresh look.

Robert Pattinson

With the strict no-sneakers rule on the red carpet, Pattinson, star of the new thriller Die, My Love, decided to put the casual chic back into Y2K fashion for his photocall. The new dad wore a pair of khaki trousers, a yellow T-shirt with a light-blue button-up, and a brown suede jacket—all on top of his Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars. He topped off the scruffy look with a pair of Port Tanger sunglasses.

Spike Lee

Reunited with Denzel Washington for his film Highest 2 Lowest, Spike Lee stepped out onto the carpet in a Knicks-inspired pinstriped zoot suit from Cointel and his own namesake Jordan Spizike sneakers. The director continued to pay tribute to his favorite basketball team throughout the festival by showing up to his movie conference in head-to-toe Knicks gear after having to miss the opening of their playoff series.

Vishal Kethwa

The new up-and-coming actor brought a bold, glistening look to the premiere of Homebound in a sleek black suit. Known for boxy shoulder looks, this Kaushik Velendra outfit was no different, with dazzling embellishments on the shoulders that almost resembled wings. Continuing with the bird motif, Kethwa ditched his tie for a golden brooch featuring two golden birds from Kavya Potluri. This was a showstopper for sure.
